Orchestra
An orchestra is a group of musicians who play string, woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments together.

There are FOUR instrument families in an orchestra:

2. Woodwinds
3. Brass
4. Percussion

Concert Master​

The violinist who sits in the 1st chair in the string section has a very important job. He or she is called a concert master and they make sure the orchestra is in tune. Watch the video!


Conductor
The conductor keeps the orchestra together. The conductor uses his or her arms to show the musicians when to stop and start, how fast or slow to play, and how loud or soft to play.

Baton
A baton is a stick that the conductor waves to keep the orchestra together. The conductor moves the baton to the tempo of the music


Tempo
Tempo is the speed of the music

​Music can be played at any speed from super slow to super fast!

Composers use Italian words like these to tell the musicians how fast or slow to play the music

A composer is the person who writes the music

Timbre
Every instrument has an unique sound, also know as timbre. Listen how each instrument sounds different.

Try describing the timbres you hear with these adjectives: 
high, low, rich, shrill, bright, airy, nasal, mellow, thin, harsh, buzzy, etc...
